When I switched on TV today, …. News …. 4 babies died after vaccination within 9 minutes. Hard and shocking news!!

This was not all death count of the day. Many others died in two different accidents. All sad, but first one was shocking because it is somehow related to all of us. We all go for vaccination, for our family and children.

How many of us really give attention on vaccination process?? When you go for it, do you check name of vaccine, manufacture, manufacturing date, expiry date and condition of vaccine??

Yes, It all matters!! Very much!!

Many of us really don’t know that vaccination is always under debate and controversies and doesn’t provide guaranteed cure from decease. We will discuss on this later, as it is not so important for most of us.

Keep in mind when go for immunization :


We really don’t have choice, we must have to go for all necessary and other vaccination. We need to protect our self, and next generation from deadest diseases. The side effects are on lower side. So what we can do … precautions. Most of us really don’t care much while doctor is giving vaccine to child or us. Few points I should mention here :

Check vaccine name and company – There are several companies are now involved in drugs manufacturing. Many are marketing companies and outsource there manufacturing to third party. In normal drugs and medicine, scenario is worst. For example paracetamol is manufactured by thousands companies in India. Many of them 2 room size unit. I don’t know what is scenario in vaccine manufacturing, but I can think it is also worst. Recently supplied vaccines, which led to 4 children dead in Tamilnadu, were manufactured by a new Gujarat / Maharastra based company. The company got fetched order first time from government and supplied first time vaccines. GlaxoSmithKline, Wyeth, Pfizer, Serum Institute of India, Merck, sanofi pasteur are some well known and good companies.
Check always dates – manufacturing date, expiry date, place of manufacturing.
Vaccination schedule – Schedule vaccination on the right time. Normally a vaccination card provided by hospitals has all date and time but most of us now days quite busy we couldn’t match exact age many times. There is no harm in postponing by few days but certainly do not propone. The chart provided by hospitals is standard, and based on national health index system. However in India, we are following mostly European chart, which doesn’t fit 100% for Indians. Growth of child in European countries are different then our India. Average birth weight in India is 3 Kg. But in Eastern and European countries, is 4.5 Kg. So always consult to doctor about right vaccination schedule.
Time – Many doctors suggest vaccination at morning timings. In India we do not have 24×7-working infractrure. Many services don’t operate after evening. So in case of any complication, services are available in daytime.
Allergy – If child has any kind of allergy with anything, it should be informed to doctor before vaccination.
Health – Child should not have any kind of illness, fever or other disease while vaccination.
Medicines – It is advised, no medicines should be given, 24 hours prior to vaccination. Also after vaccinations, medicines are subject to doctor’s supervision.
Oral polio drops – Food or other eatables should not be given up to 30 minutes after OPD.
Manual mixing of vaccines – Many times more then one vaccines given at a time by manual mixing. This we do normally to reduce numbers of injections. These are always subject to debate and different doctors have their different views. Mixing is always subject to mix right quantity, on right temperature, on hygienic environment. And most importantly, health of child. Many doctors advice that we should only goes for those vaccines, which are specially developed for two or more disease and packed while manufacturing. There is up to three vaccines successfully mixed in research and researchers working for five. These are pre-developed and manual mixing is not involved. Also manual mixing for more then one vaccines is should be decided based on health of child. Keep in mind, we can’t mix any two vaccines, the process and combinations are well defined. As of now there are not too much vaccines to be given, and we worry about numbers of injections. So I presonally think… avoid manual mixing and go for one vaccine at a time.

What is the Vaccine?

One line definition is “A vaccine is a preparation which is used to improve immunity to a particular disease”. But Vaccines are not chemical formulation like other allopathic medicines.

Vaccines are dead or inactivated organisms derived from virus/bacteria of particular disease. They contains killed or live microorganisms, taken and from blood of infected body and processed later. Few are made from toxic elements, like tetanus.

There are so many vaccines available now days. We normally concern much with childhood vaccines, and compulsory vaccines. Government of India has decided a list of vaccines, should be given within 2-year age schedule for a child. This schedule is mainly based on European vaccination system. World health organization (WHO) plays big role in making of vaccination policies worldwide. Indian vaccination schedule, made by Govt of Indian with WHO India, is as follows:

DPT=Diphtheria,Pertussis & Tetanus;
OPV =Oral Polio Vaccine;
DT=Diph & Tetanus vaccine.How ever, world vaccine programs and researching companies suggested some more vaccines.
- Hib vaccine – (protects brain fever, 3 doses, 6th, 10th, 14th, week and a booster at 18th month)

Hepatitis A ( > 1 year)
Chickenpox ( > 1 year )
MMR (Replaces Measles vaccine, combine for 3 decease, measles, mumps and rubella.
Typhoid
Pneumococcal vaccine

In July’06 Wyeth launched first Pneumococcal vaccine (named Prevenar) in India. Prevenar was licensed in 2000, and it is now part of the regular immunization schedule in many countries. But it is quite costly, available in somewhere around 3500 Rs, not affordable for most Indians. So we have to still wait for some time, till these medico companies recover their invested money and earn good enough profit, then price will come down. As of now this vaccine is not the part of necessary vaccination program, so you need to decide for it.

Pneumococcal disease is a group of illnesses caused by streptococcus pneumoniae, also known as the “pneumococcus” bacteria. These diseases are mainly attack infants and children under 2 year and in very few cases, children under 5 years.

Vaccination by Choice

There are plenty of vaccines available and many of them are not the part of childhood or necessary vaccination. This all depend on your living conditions and environ factors. Some of them are Rabies, Flu, caries (related to tooth decay), rotavirus, and smallpox.
A HPV (related to cervical cancer) is also introduced in 2006.

Vaccine controversies

There are several controversies around the world regarding safety of vaccination. There are some controversies related to ethics and morality derived by Christian gurus and religious groups. But I do not consider it as Vaccine controversy; it is there attitude problem or just non-sense. There are several incidents of boycott of vaccinations and they paid for it. A large group of Netherlands is one the victim in recent years by measles (1999–2000). In Europe and American states, a law still exists, if any one has religious issue with vaccination, the can be exempted from “national necessary vaccination program”.

I specially focus on medical controversies. There are proofs of side effects by vaccines. Certain studies and research has been proven that vaccination is not that much effective what is claimed by manufacture companies. All vaccines fall into patent law and formula is licensed to companies. The patent owner company makes huge profit by direct sale, royalty, further derivations and many other sources. A big amount goes directly by government if the vaccine is added into common necessary vaccination program. So most patent holder companies promotes their product on war level. And some time it misguide to common people. There are several cases reported in India and around world, where particular disease captured even immunization was done. And some time immediately after vaccination. Early polio program in India has several reports, that polio infected child after next day of vaccination. My father used to tell me about few cases in my childhood, mostly was from our nearby villages. It was not studied well by government but vaccine manufacture companies takes such data silently for further research and improvement in vaccine. New oral polio vaccine has much better results, but still every year many cases reported by government. In 2006, there were approx 500 polio cases reported, and approx 900 in 2007. Un-reported cases may be much more because 30% of Indian population lives in far rural areas with highly poor status, and not able to report or treat. Some NGOs believe, no is much higher then government reported, can be up to 4-5 times. One strange fact is, India holds nearly 35% yearly new polio cases from world.

However I respect “NATIONAL POLIO SURVEILLANCE PROJECT”, a tuff and expensive project execution by Govt of India with WHO. Nearly 1 Crore people involves, on the day of polio vaccination.

MMR vaccine controversy

MMR controversy comes in picture vary soon after vaccination starts. It is over safety of MMR vaccine. After giving the dose of MMR, incidence of autism has greatly increased. Autism is an abnormal absorption with the self; marked by communication disorders or somewhat mental retardation. In 1998, UK, A group of doctors published a paper regarding MMR side effects and clearly proved by study of MMR given children, that there are large growth of cases of autism. He suspended MMR vaccines at there hospital and suggested to give all 3 vaccines separately. His study denied by many medico giants and opposed by manufactures. The issue is still unresolved and further study is going on. On other hand, study shows, MMR vaccines have link with Asthma, Guillain-Barré syndrome, Crohn’s Disease, Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis, and most discussed Autism.

Also it is always advised, if child has any allergy, it should be discussed with doctor while giving MMR dose.

Thiomersal controversy

The thiomersal-containing vaccines (TCVs) are in use since 1930, have similar controversy, cause or contribute to the development of autism and other brain development disorders. Vaccine making process has involved use mercury and thiomersal, which are seeing a cause for this side effect. However medico authorities and manufacturer denies this and says there are no convincing scientific evidence. This issue is raised many times and still disputed. In 1999 Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) asked to remove thiomersal from vaccines immediately. Also they suggested, do not give does of Hepatitis-B does to new born. Many hospitals in US, suspended Hepatitis-B vaccine to newborn. Later it has been resumed.

Lawsuits

There are more then 5000 cases registered only in US, claims relating to autism. One claim was compensated, and 350 were dismissed; the rest are pending. US have prominent law for compensation, and tight justice system, that’s why people are filing lawsuits and demanding justice. Such cases also registered world wide, but here is no fact sheet or data available. Most of population even could not understand side effects of vaccines so there is no reporting, especially in devolving countries.

Denies of side effects

Well, this is clear, many researchers and doctors mentioned, vaccines have side effects. Some are high and some low. But Medical authorities and drug manufacture always denies it.

Right!! They have to deny, other wise they have to pay a big price. Many lawsuits are filled in US, UK, and many other countries. If serious side effects have proven, government has to pay lot of compensation because immunization is done under government’s necessary vaccination program. Also, vaccine manufacturers have to pay huge amount to public and public funds. On other side, it will affect manufacturers billion-dollar business. So there always controversy will be exist and immunization will go on.

Handling of vaccines.

Handling of vaccines is very important. Most of vaccines require a cold constant temperature to maintain its purity. In India we are lacking in infrastructure, we do not have 24×7 power guaranty or standby power supplies. Many times, drugs stored in refrigerators in medical stores and power fails more then 4 hours. It puts many medicines on alarm. While transportation, many times they delayed to put again in cold storage. Most vaccine suppliers always try to maintain required conditions; GSK has delicately a “cold-chain” program for this. Still there may be chance of failures.

Update : Apr 26,2008 :
A three month old baby boy died at Kambainallur village on Friday 25th Apr, 10 days after he was given the triple antigen or DTP and Hepatitis-B shots. The grieving father of the child immediately filed a police complaint against PHC medical staff. The District health authorities have sent a vial from the remaining single batch of DTP vaccine and the Hepatitis B vaccine for analysis to rule out contamination. (Source TOI)

Update : Apr 27, 2008
Another baby dies at Dindigul district Tamilnadu. 11-month old baby girl Mariammal, who died on Saturday Apr 26, was given vaccine two days ago at Narasingapuram primary health center. The preliminary report says the baby died of aspiration asphyxia. She was severely malnourished and underweight when she was brought to the PHC. (-Source TOI )

Update : Apr 30,2008 : Another death -
Infant deaths continued to create panic in Tamilnadu, with one more baby dying in Tirunelveli district on Monday ( Apr 28). 8-month old baby girl Muthu Nagu administered the Hepatitis B vaccine on April 23 ( same day when four babies died in Tiruvallur district) . (Source TOI )

Update Apr 30, 2008 ——— FIRST REPORT ON TAMILNADU KIDS DEATHS BY KILLER VACCINES ———

Toxic Shock Syndrome ( TSS ) killed the four children in Tamilnadu after giving measles vaccine.

The health ministry’s five-member expert group, headed by additional director general Shiv Lal, said in its report that “clinical and epidemiological investigations” of the deaths revealed that all four children died of TSS, which usually occurs when the vaccine is contaminated.

Update :
First Report from Lab comes out : Labs given clean chit to vaccines. This is shame on our investigation agencies. Vaccines caused 7 deaths in a week time but still lab says all those vaccines are pure and safe. Report … A piece of Shitttttt !!! Again big and rich companies won !!

Update : One more shocking fact :
measles vaccination reaction/death is highly rare and occurs in 1 out of every 10 lakh cases ..

It means … if all vaccines consumed, 35 kids dies or will die .. in a year !!!!
And here is no count of private hospitals/clinics and direct purchase from medical stores. So far .. death toll can be reached 2 to 3 times.

Think again when go for vaccination … be more careful !!!
